SE5... Ha Ha Ha... I can still see the shocked faces in the North Bank... I think he scored 2 in the last 2 mins... both from corners... pretty sure Gary Pallister flicked one on... I think it was the realisation of no matter what we did that year we was getting relegated...

I am still pissed off about Bernie Slaven's injury time winner in 1989

Years ago, win and elation and getting pissed up, lose, mood all weekend and getting pissed, now win or lose not fussed as I am usually doing something else like playing golf

Bloody hell. I'm now 5-0 down on Disney Princess Dobble to my 3 year old. Gutted, it will take some time to get over this latest defeat

Re: How does a win or defeat affect you?
Depends on the opposition, for both the bad and good feelings.

It also depends on the competition. Getting knocked out of cups, besides meaning we can't win it obviously, also means that it is likelier some other club I hate will win it, and it means that there won't be any West Ham to watch come the next round.

It's akin to having a tooth pulled now for me, but so many been pulled over the years it's as if I've become permantly anaesthetised and have no feeling either way anymore.

MancIron that is what i call justifiable sibling violence. The thing with having two girls, there are rows are not nearly as much fun.

Sydney, Coffee, I feel for you boys.

As part of a close knit family there is always someone there I can rely on for support.

Immediately after that Brum relegation game, my older (Man U) supporting brother turned to me and said "I told you that you should have supported the reds"...so I punched him.

Felt a lot better.

After a decent run of games, I usually find a replica kit or similar item of OFFICIALLY LICENSED LEISUREWEAR to sport when I make my Sunday morning trip to the Pitsea Tesco Extra. And I'm not alone in this. The place is AWASH with claret and blue on the rare occasions this happens.

When we lose, I usually avoid anything connected with football full stop for a few days. The worst part is waking up on Sunday.

Stoic when we loose. I've become immune to it now.

Still jumping out my chair shouting "Fucking get in there" When we score which has upset the Mrs a few times when it happens at 3am+

I'm an old boy now, but I still stay grumpy for a day or 2 after a loss or we concede a last minute equaliser.
I carry grudges for ages if we get bad decisions against us - will only be over that cheating kunt WIlson & B'mouth and nobb ref nicking 2 points IF we stay up

Re: How does a win or defeat affect you?
I think your right Coffee, it was the loneliness of it all that was the worst bit, and for me the way the telecast just cut off, suddenly it was black and silent apart from the hammering of rain outside, on top of that I had a stinking cold.

Lonely and utterly miserable just about sums it up.

Sydney

That game also sticks in my mind for all the wrong reasons.

I was in Manchester, sitting in a McDonalds car park on my own with the empty box of a Big Mac and a cup of luke warm coffee, listening to Radio 5. It alternated between St Andrews and the Bolton game. A steady drizzle fell outside and the windscreens were steamed up.

At the end of the game, the commentator described Joe Cole having a barny with someone as he left the field, but even that couldn't raise a smile. There was nobody there to share the misery with, only fat young mothers in ill-fitting Primark legins walking past the car and pushing handed down prams as they waddled excitedly into their favourite eatery.

It was a lonely and utterly, totally miserable afternoon.

Re: How does a win or defeat affect you?
I would like to think it doesn’t really affect me at all, it’s only a game of fucking football FFS!

But to be honest it does, not to a huge degree but I think I noticbly have more of a spring in my step and feel good after we win and the next few days, we lose or draw particularly when its against dross then it does piss me off for an hour or 2 at least.

Think the lowest point from a personal perspective was the 2003 relegation, we had to beat Brum and hope Bolton dropped points in the last game, remember sitting on my sofa with a stinking head cold feeling like shit, the game finished 2-2, the cameras swung to a celebrating Steve Bruce and then a few West Ham fans with a banner “we will be back” the Telecast then finished and the screen went black and silent, and I was left sitting in the dark, feeling like shit at about 4am on a Monday morning with it pissing down rain outside.

Re: How does a win or defeat affect you?
Probably more than I admit. I like to think that I have seen the worst several times before over 5 decades and can accept defeat more easily. But I am definitely perkier during the days following any good result. What I miss these days is the occasional stupendous run when we looked like we could beat anyone and put the fear of God up the elite teams.

When I was a youngster I was suicidal if we lost and cloud 9 if we won. These days with the benefit of experience I realise it's just a game and not the end of the world.Still pleased obviously with a win and pissed off for a while if we lose but I hate that stadium with a vengeance and don't think I'll ever get over that one.

If we lose I feel like smacking anyone who annoys me for about a day then I'm pissed off for about 3 days. A win and im in a great mood all week. . I can't help it. It's a biological thing with me.

Re: How does a win or defeat affect you?
As a young man I would spend most of the week building up to the game at the weekend, so a defeat would leave me GUTTED for a few days, whereas a win would have me right CHUFFED for a few days.

As a middle-aged man, it's same old, same old if we lose, with a mild feeling of chuffedness if we win, which lasts a few hours.

As a long term supporter I long ago learned to take results in my stride. To this day though an opponent’s extra time equaliser always disappoints me.
